The North Dakota Senate is expected to vote later today on the Fighting Sioux nickname. House and Senate committees have both endorsed a bill allowing UND to retire the Sioux name and American Indian head logo. In addition, lawmakers say UND should wait three years before replacing the Fighting Sioux nickname. A proposed amendment says the university can't adopt a new name until January first, 2015.
Representative Rae Ann Kelsch – (R) Mandan: "They can continue to use ND. But it's looking at it as a healing period for both sides because it is such a passionate issue."
The amendment and the bill that repeals the Fighting Sioux law are scheduled to be debated and voted on the Senate floor at 5:30.
