Eighteen fraud cases in Moorhead in just two weeks. In some of these cases, victims lost up to $8,000.

Moorhead Police are investigating the fraud cases, but says its nearly impossible to track down the culprits. Many of the scam artists are from other countries. Their phone numbers and addresses are untraceable. The internet scams involved so called prize money or bad checks written to Craigslist sellers. Other victims were told over the phone that their loved ones were in trouble and needed money. Some victims were elderly.

Lt. Tory Jacobson – Moorhead Police Department: "But they're trying to prey upon the feelings of the family, the support in some cases they even use somebody representing a contact so they may say this relative is out of the country and I'm assisting this person by contacting you in the United States."

So here's how you can protect yourself: Ask a lot of questions, ask for their phone number or business location, and call the loved one or another close relative to see if anyone is in fact in danger.

Moorhead Police are doing their best to educate the public. They say the more scam artists are successful, the more they prey on the unsuspecting public. Scam artists also try to solicit personal information by claiming to belong to certain organizations.
