Major Snowstorm Causing Big Problems Out East

(WDAY TV) -- More than 2.3 million customers along the East Coast are without power because of a major snowstorm that couldn't wait for winter.

The heavy snow measures in feet. Flights are disrupted, trains delayed, and roads condition continue to worsen. Three deaths are now blamed on this storm.

The early-bird blizzard made college football games into snow-bowls. near-whiteout conditions turned grips into slips as players struggled more against the weather than one another. Slick surfaces made for more than the usual number of fumbles, tumbles, and stumbles.

In Vermont, the snow outpaced skiers by weeks, leaving empty ski resorts with lots of the white stuff and no one to enjoy it.

Marie Harrigan, (NJ Resident): "I was like, ugh. Not happy at all. And i was surprised we were having so much."

For millions, the sneak preview of winter is too much, too soon.

Michale Kronberg (West Nyack, NY): "I wish it weren't coming in October, trick-or-treating in the snow."

The storm spurred a scramble to store shelves, as people stocked up on salt, shovels, and snow blowers.

Steve Meyer (Home Depot Manager): "Most people do wait until the last minute, they wait until the snow is on the ground to come in and buy snow shovels and salt."

Authorities hustled to get salt spreaders and snow plows ready to hit the roads as the storm bore down.

The same system that hit Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas has joined forces with moisture from the tropics-- forming a classic nor-Easter.

Hundreds of thousands are without electricity as falling trees take down power lines.

More than a thousand flights have been cancelled in the Eastern U.S. and the snow is testing the resolve of occupy-Wall-Street protesters in their tent cities.

Zach Cheney (Occupy Wall Street Protester): "I came with snow pants and heavy coats and scarves and thick gloves. I am concerned about some of the other people here."

The storm is expected to pass by early Sunday morning.

Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut have all declared states of emergencies. Central Park has set a record for the date and month.
