Firefighters from two departments ran into major problems battling a blaze at an ag plant near Mapleton. The fire started at Westway Feed Products about 5 Thursday evening. Dozens of firefighters arrived to heavy smoke billowing into the air that could be seen miles away. Crews from Casselton had to be called in for backup.

A total of seven trucks were on scene, some for four hours. Firefighters had trouble stopping the flames from spreading even more because they had to climb ladders and cut into heavy gauge steal.

Jon Warner – Mapleton Fire Chief: “There's a lot of insulation coverage damage right now. There will be duct work damage for our breaching of entry, motors, everything is going to be pretty much damaged in some way.”

Damage estimates aren't known. Fire officials say too much debris in the piping system caused that fire. The plant is expected to be closed tomorrow.
