Good news for commuters on the north side of the metro and residents of Oakport. Wall Street through Oakport Township reopened today. The road was closed to allow for construction of a new levee. The levee will protect the town to 45 feet while still allowing water to flow through the old river channel that splits the town. This is the largest piece of a flood protection plan for Oakport.
Jeff Schaumann – Chair Oakport Town Board: “Really these road crossings and the opening of Wall Street that results in the savings of a huge amount of dirt that needs to be moved in the event of spring floods. “
The last major piece of flood protection for the town will be the raising of the roadway on Broadway.
