A Fargo lawmaker is the first to come forward with legislation to get rid of the Fighting Sioux Nickname law passed earlier this year. State Senator Tim Mathern drafted this bill that would simply repeal or overturn the law December 1st. That law requires UND to keep the controversial nickname and logo. Mathern expects legislation to pass the senate in the special session. The democrat wants to get the word out what is in the bill so there are no last minute surprises.
State Senator Tim Mathern – (D) Fargo: “So what I'm really doing is just shining the light, opening a window so people know the actual reality of a bill draft.”
Lawmakers meet November 7th. Other nickname bills are likely to be introduced.
