Voyageurs Park fire expected to burn rest of fall

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Officials expect a forest fire burning in a remote area of Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota will continue burning the rest of this fall.

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Officials expect a forest fire burning in a remote area of Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota will continue burning the rest of this fall.

The National Park Service said Tuesday the Tooth Lake Fire remains at about 300 acres. The fire is burning in mixed pine and hardwood forest, two miles south of Namakan Lake.

Officials say recent rain and colder weather have stopped the fire's spread, and no additional spread is expected.

However, the fire is expected to continue burning through the rest of the fall. The fire won't be declared out until several inches of snow falls on the area.

Lightning sparked the fire. The park's fire management staff has been using aircraft to monitor the fire since it was detected in late August.
