A fugitive, considered armed and dangerous, has been captured in Fergus Falls. 38 year-old William Gajdik had been on the run for 10 weeks. He broke out of a Nebraska prison in July. Since then, police said he robbed two Indiana houses, shooting a home owner in the process, stole the victim's car, and left it in Iowa to steal another. Authorities tracked him by getting reports of stolen items he sold to pawn shops, the latest in Fargo. Staff at the Super 8 in Fergus Falls said Gajdik gave them his real name and paid in cash. Officers in plain clothes staked out the hotel until Gajdik stepped out for a cigarette. He was tackled on his way back to his room.
Kile Bergren – Fergus Falls Police Chief: “Fargo Police Department did an excellent job in trying to track down this individual's whereabouts, and they had provided us with information that he was registered at one of the local hotels here in Fergus Falls. It speaks volumes to the teamwork is takes to a lot of police work."
Gajdik is still in custody at the Otter Tail County jail, but authorities said he'll be transferred back to Indiana to face his charges.
