We are giving you an unsettling look at that brazen breakout in Barnes County. The convicted felon fleeing for freedom.
At the scene of that crime, that rest area, the North Dakota DOT has eight security cameras. Those cameras capture scenes 24 hours a day and they were on that very moment convicted sex offender Joseph Megna escaped.
In the upper left hand side of the screen, you can see the transport van pulling up to park on the northeast side of the lot. From there, the exclusive footage shows guards in fluorescent vests, escorting convicts into the building to use the bathroom. You can see the line of felons, normally dressed, not shackled. Within minutes there's confusion.
A Game and Fish employee comes into the entrance to see if anyone has seen the convicted high-risk sex offender. Not sure what to think, the prisoners look puzzled. From there, guards quickly run to try to find the man who bolted. The entire ordeal lasts less than 15 minutes, but the video may turn into evidence for prosecutors.
“I guess that's up to them. I'm uncertain what they're going to get from this incident. Well we've not seen an incident like this before no,” DOT district manager John Thompson said.
Since the cameras show limited areas, they never showed Megna or the full vantage point of where the transport van parked.
The cameras show images up to 100 feet away. Even so, they will likely prove valuable in this case.
