The wicked wind whipped up problems for firefighters battling a blaze in rural Clay County. It started a couple miles northwest of Felton around 4:30 this afternoon. Dozens of firefighters from six departments fought flames. The blaze actually consisted of two fires. The first started in a ditch then quickly spread to two large cornfields. There were no machines in the field at the time. Authorities aren't sure what sparked the grass fire but the wind definitely fueled the fire.

Bill Bergquist – Clay County Sheriff: “And when you kind of look at it, somebody started burning this ditch or maybe even threw a cigarette out, you know, you don't know. We want you to call right away when you see the smallest of fires because like you say hey after this, this just goes to show you and plus the dry conditions.”

Damage estimates aren't known. The edges of the cornfields are mostly charred.
