That massive manhunt for the escaped prisoner caused people to panic all the way to Valley City. The school district immediately went into lock down mode to keep students and staff safe.

As soon as the school superintendent found out the convicted sex offender was still on the loose in this field, he didn't think twice. He immediately locked all doors to the four schools.

The district made the rare move at 7:30 this morning. That has happened fewer than five times in Valley City history. The lock down forced students and staff to stay put. They could not come and go as usual. All doors to the buildings and individual classrooms were locked. Staff then used cameras to keep a watchful eye on entrances. The district sent a mass email about the concern and lock down to parents and staff. It also used instance alert, similar to Code RED. That system made about 1,500 phone calls to concerned parents in five minutes.
