The city of Fargo has a moratorium in place against new construction near rivers, but city commissioners tonight approved a request for an addition to a home at 5310 68th street south. The home is along the Sheyenne River but the owner says 75% of the construction is within the moratorium boundaries. The city moratorium committee voted to deny the request, but commissioners Mahoney and Wimmer and Mayor Walaker voted to approve it and that didn't sit well with commissioners Williams and Piepkorn.

Dave Piepkorn – Fargo City Commissioner: “I cannot believe it that we are allowing somebody to build closer to the river what is going on in the world today?”

Mike Williams – Fargo City Commissioner: “You know we have proven to the world that we are good flood fighters, but we haven't proven to our residents that we are good flood preventers.”

The owner of the house says he has a dike and has never had to sandbag his property in the 20 years he's lived there.
