Fargo, ND (WDAY Sports) - Today marks a historic anniversary in baseball history. Dom Izzo has more on Fargo's Homerun Hero.
Our month and a half journey has brought us here, to Holy Cross cemetery, where Roger Maris' gravesite is filled with baseballs and a Yankee hat from that 1961 season and a likeness of him hitting one of those record-breaking homeruns.
Today we take you back 50 years, October 1, 1961, to Yankee stadium. Roger Maris at the plate, Tracy Stallard of the Red Sox on the mound when history was made.
Announcer: “Fastball hit to right to deep right. This could be it, way back there, holy cow he did it. 61 for Maris. They're fighting for that ball out there. Holy cow, what a shot. Another standing ovation for Roger Maris!”
Roger Maris: “I don't think it was so much the pressure of playing the game of baseball, but answering all the questions from the press day after day. Before the game it's the writers and after the game it's the writers.”
“Roger Maris's legacy will never be lost in baseball history, never.”
