FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Saturday is the 50th anniversary of the home run that New York Yankees slugger Roger Maris hit to break Babe Ruth's single-season home run record.

Maris hit 61 homers in 1961. He hit the record-breaker on Oct. 1 that year, driving a pitch from Boston's Tracy Stallard into the right field stands.

Maris was born in Minnesota and raised in Fargo. A cancer center in the city is named in his honor. The Yankees donated $10,000 to the center as part of an on-field ceremony honoring Maris before a game last weekend.

Maris died from Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1998 and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fargo.
