Missing class isn't always a bad thing. In Perham, one teenage girls missed exam put her in the right place at the right time. So was it coincidence or was it fate?
Barb Torgerson usually takes this drive on Highway 78 north into Perham by herself, but on this day her daughter had an early math test...a math test that probably saved her life. Shortly after 7:30 a.m. this car ride took a dramatic turn.
Barb Torgerson – Had seizure while driving: “I could feel that as I got closer to Perham, I was sweating real bad and my stomach was hurting down below.”
Trisha Kawlewski – Barb’s Daughter: “So then I looked up and she was drooling and twitching and I could tell she was having a seizure.”
The second youngest of Barb's 11 children and with only a learner’s permit, Trisha had one thing in mind.
Trisha Kawlewski: “I didn't think we were going to live, I thought when I saw her that she was dead right away, then I thought to myself that it's going to be me next because how am I going to stop the car.”
But stop the car is just what she did, maneuvering around her seizing mother from the passenger seat.
Trisha Kawlewski: “I went over, I grabbed the wheel first and reached with my other hand down here and pushed on the break. Then I would bob my head up and down to see where I was going.”
After traveling nearly a mile, Trisha successfully pulled into a driveway. Her mother unconscious as she frantically called 911. Hours later Barb was released from the hospital with a clean bill of health. Doctors say it was a stress induced seizure. But never forgotten will be the car ride that nearly ended both of their lives.
Trisha Kawlewski: “I just think that we're really lucky.”
Barb Torgerson: “I know God was watching over us and thank God Trisha was with me.”
Not surprisingly, Trisha's math teacher was understanding as to why she missed her make-up exam.
