On Wednesday, we saw how Roger Maris's record breaking homerun season was commemorated in Cooperstown. Tonight, WDAY 6 Sports Director Dom Izzo shows how Maris's legacy is honored in the New Yankee Stadium.
This is hallowed ground at Yankee Stadium, Monument Park, and right behind me the very same one you see at the West Acres mall, Roger Maris's plaque hangs here. Tonight, we'll take you around Yankee Stadium to see all the mementos honoring the great career of Fargo's most popular resident.
The biggest tribute to Maris sits in Monument Park where his number is on display for everyone to see and describes his record breaking year as one of the greatest achievements in baseball history and reads that Maris was one of the most courageous Yankees ever. It's seems only fitting his plaque is next to Mickey Mantle's, the man he was so close with during that great season.
The number 9 is everywhere you look in this place, from Monument Park, to the concourse, to left field, where it's displayed with all the other Yankee greats.
The section that gets the most attention is the museum, where every Yankee who's ever put on the pinstripes has signed a ball, and Maris's doesn't sit too from the man whose record he dared to break.
Tomorrow, Maris will get his day in the sun, unlike any day in his career. As he'll be honored like Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle and Dimaggio were, with a day here in his name in the Bronx.
