The political turmoil in Valley City is reaching a whole new level. Hundreds of people have now turned in a petition calling for the recall of Mayor Bob Werkhoven.
For Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven, it all started in February with a simple oral reprimand.
Mayor Bob Werkhoven – Valley City: “We haven't done anything wrong, it's obvious there is some vindictiveness going on here but we'll just see what happens.”
A petition signed by more than 500 people has been turned into the city auditor's office. It's calling for a recall election for the mayor and one of the city's commissioners. After verifying enough signatures have been collected, Auditor Avis Richter says a recall election must be held within 100 days.
Avis Richter – City Auditor, Valley City: “It's difficult, I've seen better days in Valley City, and I'm hoping we can get back to those days.”
As hard as it is for the people involved, the tumultuous political climate has been just as frustrating for the people of Valley City.
Patricia Pederson – Valley City: “The atmosphere in town is nasty and when people start behaving like two-year-olds, it's embarrassing.”
Pat Fearing – Valley City: “I think it's too bad that in a town as close-knit as Valley City that something like this had to happen.”
For Mayor Werkhoven, being Mayor is not something he is willing to just give up.
Mayor Bob Werkhoven: “I'm not rolling over on this, somebody is going to have to beat me.”
The commissioner up for a recall election is Ken Evenson. Richter has 30 days to verify the signatures.
