East Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- Children will soon flock to the Sherlock Forest Playground in East Grand Forks. But first a week of hard work is ahead for the community. Volunteers are preparing for rebuilding.
The sound of shovels, saws and drills marked the beginning of a busy week for volunteers at Sherlock Park.
Katie Nelson, Rebuilding Committee Co-Chair: "we are getting the site ready for the volunteers to come tomorrow morning."
In just one short week a bigger, better playground will sit behind this orange fence. Hundreds of volunteers and tools are needed every day to help with the build.
Katie: "we need lots of heavy duty wheel barrows, shovels, rakes, rasps, scissors, screw drivers, tape measures, and if when you do come if you can come bring your own gloves-- work gloves and also if you have a tool belt with tape measure bring that too."
Rick Coulter, Volunteer from EGF: "come on out and help. There'll be a job for anybody, you don't have any special carpentry skills, I mean there's shoveling, there's staining, there's all kinds of things. They're going to need the help.
After the old playground burned down in an accidental fire in May, the community came together in just a few short months to build a much bigger place for children to play.
Katie: "this is basically for the community and it's a life changing experience. when you get down here, it's just like your blood if pumping, you're ready to go and you know the first thing you do is make a difference for the community so it's really awesome."
Jeff Mlodzik, Volunteer: "It's a good experience. It's fun to help out, meet a lot of people, you'll see how fast this goes up and it's just a lot of fun."
350 volunteers are needed for three shifts every day starting at 8 in the morning. There's no need to pre-register, just show up, sign in, and be prepared to work.
Only one-fourth of the playground wasn't damaged.
