Minneapolis, MN (WDAY TV) -- Eleanor Mondale was just 51 years old. She was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2005. Eleanor carved out a name in her own right as a campaigner, entertainment reporter, and radio show host.

She lived with the blessing and burden of her last name, Eleanor Mondale. She stood in the shadow of her famous father, but the striking and the vivacious daughter of the former Vice President made her own mark in this world.

Susie Jones hosted a radio show with Mondale at WCCO radio. Mondale built a reputation as a TV entertainment reporter and gossip magnet of the party circuit

Susie: “George Clooney came on our show once and invited her to Italy and I'm like George Clooney is inviting you to Italy.”

And then there were the political stars she knew... from kings to presidents.

Susie: “One time she said to me in casual conversation one time at Camp David and I said you know Eleanor not everyone gets to say.”

Two days ago as the end neared.... Susie spoke to her friend for the final time.

Susie: “I kissed her... Ha... And I whisper that I loved her... Because she was pretty much not talking and asleep.”

In a statement no father should have to write but today Walter Mondale did: "Joan and I must report that our wonderful daughter, Eleanor Mondale Poling, after her long and gutsy battle against cancer, went up to heaven last night to be with her angel,"

Susie: “I really feel honored to know her... she has made me a better person and my life was richer because of her.”

Mondale started her career as an actress, with bit parts in TV’s "three's company" and "dynasty."
