Some people in Horace barely escaped an apartment fire this morning. Tonight a handful of them are homeless. The fire destroyed apartment garages, and damaged the building extensively.

An apartment fire in Horace has caused thousands of dollars in damages, but many renters say they're just lucky to be alive.

Justin Frank – Lost Car in Fire: “It's a big relief that the building itself didn't catch on fire anymore than it did.”

Justin Frank came sprinting out of his apartment shortly after three this morning.

Justin Frank: “I woke up to one of my neighbors pounding on my door with a fire extinguisher. He said ‘Hey man, we gotta get up, we gotta go.’ As soon as we got outside, we could tell one of the garages was completely engulfed.”

Frank ran back in to warn others before staying outside. Now his vehicle is a pile of burning wreckage. His apartment has heavy smoke and water damage, and he has no insurance.

Justin Frank: “I have no idea, starting over again.”

The Horace Fire Department called for help from West Fargo after the fire, which started in the garages, spread to the apartments.

Ryan Hagel – Horace Fire Chief: “They showed up, helped us do an interior search again, make sure nobody was in there and helped us with the exterior.”

Fire officials estimate the damage at more than $100,000 but there is still no cause. The Red Cross helped 15 residents with clothing and groceries.
