BERWYN, Ill. — Child welfare authorities are investigating the mother of a 14-year-old boy who died at a filthy suburban Chicago home filled with nearly 200 animals.

The boy was found dead outside his Berwyn home on Thursday. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says he died of pneumonia.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says three of his siblings between the ages of 12 and 17 are in state custody.

DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe says a fourth sibling was being treated at a hospital for an undisclosed illness.

Authorities say the home was filled with animals including cats, dogs, birds, a squirrel, and a raccoon, among others.

Cook County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Patterson says animal control officers called the home "easily the worst they've been in."
