Wheatland, ND (WDAY TV) -- A middle aged man is lucky to be alive after his vehicle was hit by a train in rural Cass County. Authorities are on scene reconstructing the crash. It happened on 150th Avenue South, east of Wheatland around 7:15 tonight. Authorities say the man may have tried to beat the train at dusk. The train clipped the back of his suburban, spinning the vehicle into a nearby ditch. Engineers hit brakes, but couldn't stop in time. The driver, who's name hasn't been released, was taken to a Fargo hospital. The extent of his injuries isn’t yet known. He was conscious. Keenan Zudel of the Cass Co. Sherrif’s Dept. says, “if you would have been back a little further or if the train would have been going faster, it could have been a little different so. We're glad that as of right now he was talking.” There are no cross arms at the crossing.The vehicle is totaled.
