Maris grandson has new view on grandfather
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Walking along Roger Maris Drive in Fargo is a unique experience for one freshman at North Dakota State University.
The Forum reports (http://bit.ly/ns6yYS) that the baseball great's grandson, Richie Maris, is spending his college years in his grandfather's hometown.
Richie Maris, who is from Florida, will be a student manager on the NDSU basketball team.
Roger Maris' record of 61 home runs stood until 1998. He died from Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1998 and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fargo.
Richie Maris said to him, Roger Maris has always been the grandfather he never met. But now he sees how big of a name he is in Fargo. He said seeing people around campus wearing Maris jerseys makes him think about his grandfather in a different way.
