(WDAY Sports) - He's one of the greatest athletes in North Dakota history and next month he'll receive the greatest honor you can in competition.

Phil Hansen will have his number retired by the Buffalo Bills. We traveled out to Jamestown, to the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame to find out if any other North Dakota natives besides Roger Maris that have their name or number retired.

Bob King - President, ND Sports Hall of Fame: “I go back a long way in North Dakota sports, but at this point those are the only 2. I can remember watching Phil as a high football and basketball player, as a tall langly good football player to what he became at NDSU to what he did with the Buffalo Bills. It's the culmination for any athlete for any sport to get your number retired.”

We'll have much more on Phil and Roger Maris over the next 6 weeks. WDAY 6 Sports will be at ceremonies honoring Maris and Hansen in New York coming up in September.
