Those who loved and knew Deputy Chris Dewey best say justice in his name has been served tonight. A jury in Crookston tonight has found Thomas Fairbanks guilty of first degree murder in the shooting death of Deputy Chris Dewey. For some who knew Chris Dewey, the guilty verdict will mean yet another chapter closed in this tragic story.
The jury of 5 women and 7 men deliberated over two days, about 8 hours total. Following the reading of the emotional verdict, the jurors were escorted out of the Polk County Courthouse to their cars, many of them carrying suitcases and bags from the overnight stay. The Fairbanks family told us off camera this afternoon that while they sympathize with the Dewey family, they are hurting too. They told us from their car tonight justice was not served.
Meantime, Mahnomen County Sheriff Doug Krier, who was Dewey's boss, said there will be closure from this verdict. He says Deputy Dewey's wife was pleased with the guilty verdict, which will send Fairbanks to prison for life. With deputies behind him, some who were involved in the shooting and stand off that day, Krier talked about a very unsettling question he cannot get out of his head.
Doug Krier – Mahnomen: “The only answer I don't have is why. Why did he do that? I don't know if we'll ever get that answer.”
