A Fargo lawmaker is looking at the lockout to clarify state law that prevents those union workers in North Dakota from getting unemployment. State Senator Tim Mathern is drafting legislation after workers contacted him about the vague law. The law doesn't specifically say unemployment covers lockouts. Mathern says it may mean just adding one word to the law.
State Senator Tim Mathern – (D) Fargo: “If a worker is locked out, it's really the same as if they were fired. I mean, they do not chose to leave, something happened where they're not able to work.”
Minnesota workers are eligible. The bill could be on the agenda for the November special session.
