Man involved in Valley City shooting identifiedVALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — Police say a Valley City man who allegedly fired rifle shots into two businesses before dying a short time later in a vehicle crash had been involved in an altercation with employees at one of the businesses.
Authorities say they believe 21-year-old Matthew Schaefer fired three shots into the Brothers III convenience store and a single shot in the Dakota Silver liquor store on Tuesday afternoon, before crashing his pickup truck into a power pole near Baldhill Dam on the Sheyenne River north of the city. No one inside the businesses was hurt.
Police Detective Mark McDonald says Schaefer had been involved in an altercation with workers at the liquor store. He did not elaborate.
Schaefer's body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Bismarck for an autopsy.
