CAVALIER, N.D. (AP) — A longtime power in North Dakota 11-man football is joining the 9-man ranks this season because of declining enrollment.
Cavalier won three straight Class AA state titles beginning in 2002, and had a 47-game winning streak that was snapped in the 2005 Class A state championship game. The northeast North Dakota school reached the Class A state quarterfinals in 2009 and last season was eliminated in the A semifinals.
The team's coach, Sandy Laxdal, isn't a newcomer to the 9-man ranks. The Grand Forks Herald reports (http://bit.ly/qiIePi) that he coached at Cando for six seasons before moving to Cavalier, where he's entering his third season as head coach.
