Opening Day Celebration for Davies High School Continues

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Soon students will start class at Davies High School, and the celebration of its inaugural year continues.

Soon students will start class at Davies High School, and the celebration of its inaugural year continues. Several high-ranking judges and members of the Little Rock Nine honored the school at a dedication ceremony.

Myron Bright – Judge, 8th Circuit Court of Appeals: “August 21st, this day in 2011, is a great day for the city of Fargo and for the State of North Dakota.”

School may not start until later this week, but hundreds showed up to officially honor the years work that went into making this building a possibility. Named after Judge Ronald N. Davies, the school's motto is Honor, Integrity and the Pursuit of Excellence. In 1957 Judge Davies ruled that Little Rock's Central High School must be desegregated.

Carlotta Walls LaNier – Member of Little Rock Nine: “That image of a soaring eagle and a swooping eagle seems appropriate for Judge Ronald Davies. For that is really what Judge Davies did for us in Little Rock.”

Myron Bright – Judge, 8th Circuit Court of Appeals: “He stood up to the mob as you well know and did say is the law is the law and desegregation shall go on.”

With the legacy of Judge Davies in mind, Carlotta Walls LaNier encouraged students to stand by their school motto.

Carlotta Walls LaNier – Member of Little Rock Nine: “I want you to remember in the midst of action and bullies, then and now, in his memory, there be no bullies here.”

44-million dollars later, Davies High School is just days away from filling these empty hallways once and for all.

Jim Johnson – Fargo School Board President: “From this day forward let the entire state of North Dakota, the eagles are here to stay.”

Fargo Public Schools kicks-ff classes on Thursday.
