Family and Friends continue to mourn the loss of US Army Sergeant Matthew Harmon. The Fosston, Minnesota native was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday by an explosion while recovering a vehicle.
Irene Harmon - Mother of Sargent Mathew: "Every parent has a concern. But I support my kids in what they do. And I was fine with it."
Mathew's mother Irene says she is still in shock over the news of his death, but there has been a lot of family and community support. She says is not bitter with the military.
Irene Harmon: "He was doing what his job required him to do. Not everybody wants to be in deployment. Nobody does. But that was part of the job."
Even though Mathew hasn't lived in Fosston since high school, friends say there is a void in town today.
Tom Sedler – Former High School Principal: “He and my son ran cross country together. So I had a little bit of a closer connection to him for a few short years. He came from a real solid family and he is going to be missed.”
Harmon leaves behind a wife and three kids that are stationed in Germany. Irene Harmon says they will return home soon to be with family.
Irene Harmon: "We have three wonderful grand kids from him that are going to need their grand parents, mother, siblings, and aunts and uncles.”
Harmon's family will fly to Germany for a memorial service for Mathew next week. There are plans to hold a memorial service in a couple of weeks in the Fosston school gym.
