Fargo city leaders are already talking about and planning for the spring flood fight of 2012. The fourth flood fight in a row could mean higher sales taxes. To help pay the tremendous cost of flood fighting, the city is considering asking for a half cent tax when the current half cent streets and water tax expires. A number of projects are underway to make emergency levies, permanent and to build flood walls in some neighborhoods.
Mayor Dennis Walaker – Fargo: “What is this all going to cost? We cannot spend $100 million because we don't have it and still fund our share of the diversion. It's an impossibility without additional funds.”
The city has already put in an order for 3 million sandbags. 700,000 filled bags are in storage.
