BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Republican activist Duane Sand says he'll challenge GOP Congressman Rick Berg for the Republican endorsement to run for the U.S. Senate.
Sand says Berg "mortgaged our future" and "misled us" by supporting legislation to raise the national debt limit.
Sand on Monday called the debt bill an "abomination" and called Berg a "big-spending candidate" who doesn't deserve a promotion to the Senate.
Sand says Berg should support cutting federal spending instead of adding debt.
Berg spokeswoman Alee (AL'-ee) Lockman says the incumbent is "working to change Washington's broken culture of unsustainable spending."
Sand has previously run unsuccessful campaigns for the U.S. House and Senate.
Berg and Sand are the only declared candidates so far for the North Dakota Republican endorsement to run for the Senate.
