ST. PAUL PARK, Minn. (AP) — A man who authorities say was on a mission to kill police officers is charged with attempted murder as a result of a nearly five-hour standoff in St. Paul Park.
The Washington County attorney says 22-year-old Nathan Kluessendorf shot at two sheriff's deputies and one Cottage Grove officer after they responded to his home on a report that he was suicidal.
A criminal complaint alleges Kluessendorf fired as many as 40 rounds before he was shot and wounded by a law enforcement sniper after barricading himself inside the home Aug. 2. One deputy said bullets "whizzed" by the officers' heads as they took cover behind a bullet proof shield.
Kluessendorf is charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of first-degree assault.
