PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Investigators are trying to determine what led to a shootout in Rapid City that ended with one police officer dead and two others wounded.

Police Chief Steven Allender says the officers approached four people on Tuesday who were exhibiting suspicious behavior at an intersection and that one of the four fired on the officers. The other three people are not accused of wrongdoing.

At least one of the officers fired on the suspect and he underwent surgery Tuesday. Police have not publicly identified him or disclosed the seriousness of his injures.

Twenty-eight-year-old Officer James Ryan McCandless was killed. Twenty-seven-year-old Officer Nick Armstrong was listed in critical condition Wednesday at Rapid City Regional Hospital, and 39-year-old Officer Tim Doyle was in fair condition.
