As of today Valley City Police Chief Dean Ross still has a job. The Chief has been under investigation over the past several weeks over allegations he misappropriated funds. People in Valley City have also been passing a petition to eliminate the City Administrator position. Administrator Jon Cameron is the one who first headed the investigation into Chief Ross.
Early this morning, City Commissioners held a closed Executive Session to discuss the ongoing investigation of Chief Ross. For the dozens of people who showed up to this morning's 7 a.m. commission meeting wanting answers...they left disappointed.
Lloyd Nelson – Lived in Valley City entire life: “It could have been resolved very easily, it should've been handled properly and it wasn't. The city commission allowed this to get totally out of control.”
Marsha Offner – Supports Chief Ross: “I think it is totally wrong, the commissioners don't listen to the people. What they've done against Dean Ross is totally out of line.”
The Commissioners decided to table taking any actions until the investigation into Chief Ross by the North Dakota Criminal Bureau of Investigations is completed. If he is reinstated, Ross doesn't know if he would event want his job back.
Dean Ross – Valley City Police Chief: “Not in the condition city government is right now, I can't say that. Because of mainly Jon Cameron, he's the problem in city government right now.”
Many people in Valley City believe this is a personal witch hunt by city administrator Jon Cameron. A claim city officials deny completely.
Jon Cameron – Valley City Adminstrator: “Well I'd have to say that's pretty ludicrous. We follow the facts where the facts lead us and there's nothing personal.”
Bob Werkhoven – Valley City Mayor: “We enlisted the help of the BCI just to make sure that it's not considered something personal on our part. And we certainly don't like this. It's just not in my makeup to enjoy this kind of stuff.”
Mayor Werkhoven says he fully supports Administrator Cameron and his position. As of right now, Chief Ross is still on paid Administrative Leave.
Ross: “Look out the windshield, it's a lot larger than the review mirror. So, I'm looking forward, I'm looking ahead. Whatever happens, happens. It’s in their hands right now. It's in the city's hands.”
City officials think the earliest they could see a resolution, would be late August, early September.
