Some troubling news tonight for several small-town post offices in our area. The postal service is threatening to shut down 1 in 10 offices in the Minnesota and North Dakota.
With the threat of the closure, small post offices like this one in Georgetown, Minnesota may be the first to close its doors. We broke the news to some of the people in Georgetown today, and they say they're shocked.
Jane Mattheis – Georgetown, MN: “I swing by, bring my mail in. I get all my stamps here and there is so little left in these rural communities now that the post office is just one more thing.”
The closures are being blamed on decreased business. A press release out of Washington says more customers are doing their postal business online or with their smart phones. The Postal service says they’ll be doing studies to figure out customer needs in nearly 3,700 retail offices. People in Georgetown say if their post office closes it will take away the one of the few things this small town has left.
Don Culp – Georgetown, MN: “These little towns there isn't much left the way it is and if they close the post office it will be like a ghost town.”
There are nearly 10 offices in our region being considered for closure.
