Bids are in for construction of an emergency outlet on Sanborn Lake controlling water from flowing into the Sheyenne. The project will cost between 277 and 323 thousand dollars and take a month to complete. Around 200 people in Sanborn are surrounded by high water. The only way to get out of town is by one gravel road. A train crosses that road, separating residents from emergency services on the other side. Rail tracks were built higher, but the swelling slew is still causing the railroad to suffer.

Duane Lettenmaier – Barnes County Water Resource District: "They can't build it up anymore. The top of their engines would hit the bottom of the bridge. And there is water on the track. They are down to five miles per hour."

BNSF is paying up to $300,000 for the outlet.
