It's tough enough walking from the grocery store to your car in this heat and humidity. Now, imagine being the hundreds of wrestlers in town for the big tournament at the Dome. In order to cut weight, many are out jogging with full gear in these conditions.
It's one thing to go out for a run on days like this. But imagine wearing sweat pants, hooded sweatshirts and more during a jog. 800 wrestlers from 42 states packed an air conditioned FargoDome today, Here for the week-long USA Tournament. But hours before they hit the mat, many of these wrestlers dropped weight by running in our vicious heat and humidity.
These boys from the state of Washington are used to running outside back home, even in warm conditions, but nothing like this.
Tanner Orndorff – Washington Wrestler: “They trust that we do not go overboard.”
Colton Orrino – Washington Wrestler: “Pretty crappy but you get used to it being hot part of the sport I guess. “
Athletic trainers here at the tournament are reminding wrestlers about the dangers of layering clothing, and running in these conditions.
Scott Woken – Athletic Trainer: “They tape their wrists shut and hoods tied tight.”
Scott Woken: “With heat and exercise combined without water we worry about heat exhaustion heat stroke and any kind of heat illnesses.”
And athletic trainers tell us that in addition to cutting back on water to make weight, some wrestlers obviously are eating less, and during heat like this, nutrition becomes a big concern as well.
