2 injured after train derails in Fridley

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A freight train derailed in Fridley, injuring two people.

The Star Tribune reports 17 railcars and

two locomotives derailed on an overpass over Rice Creek, which

flows into the Mississippi River, at about 7:15 a.m. Saturday.

Fridley Police Capt. Brian Weierke says overnight rains washed

out a rail bridge over the Mississippi River. It also closed part

of Interstate 35W, flooded roads and basements and downed trees.

Weierke says the two injured crew members were taken to a

hospital with noncritical injuries.

The railcars were carrying corn, but the two locomotives spilled

diesel and authorities are working to stop the fuel from leaking

into the river.

Metro Transit canceled all six regularly scheduled trips between

Big Lake and Minneapolis Saturday as well as service for the

evening Twins game.
