According to Polk County law enforcement officials, they have extra officers this holiday season just to keep drivers safe.

The Department of Public Safety sponsors the Safe and Sober Program.

Police officers, like in East Grand Forks, get paid overtime by Public Safety to simply focus on the roads.

Traffic control is important during the holidays, because icy roads and DWI increases can cause more accidents or deaths this time of year.

"Just keep in mind the reason they're stopping you is not the enforce the minor stuff. To make sure you're driving safely and you're not impaired," said Officer Aeisso Schrage with the East Grand Forks Police Department.

Schrage said they will have extra patrol officers through New Year's.
