They are still scratching their heads at Ponderosa Golf Course near Glyndon. Not far from the Number 2 Tee Box, a large circular burn in the fairway. Not a crop circle, but a mystery nonetheless. Some are even toying with the U-word-UFO!!!!
On this perfect par day at Ponderosa, a fairway full of hopeful hackers. But as they all passed the number two fairway....a site no one has seen before.
Don Johnson – Ponderosa Golf Course: “There was no explanation for it. We did not know exactly what was going on.”
Ponderosa golf course manager Don Johnson has his theories.
Don: “Had to be a UFO, glad nobody got hurt.”
This burned circular mark in the middle of the fairway, complete with special square marks....could it be?
Don: “Landing Gear, that's Landing Gear Pads”
Landing Pads, as in.....
And veteran golf players here at Ponderosa say, ever since the mysterious mark appeared, it has been affecting their golf game. A magnetic pull to the left and slice to the right.
Howard Barlow – Golfer: “I have missed shots I would have easily made before, and the ball goes up like that and comes back down, yeah.”
Herm Holland – Golfer “And on that hole I took a 9 instead of a bogie.”
Ray Evanger, knows affectionately as Banger, comes to work before sunrise everyday.
Ray Evanger – Golfer: “That's just it, where did it come from, you see.”
He found the burn circle.
Ray: “Nobody can figure it out.”
Another possible reason for the UFO theory? MSUM's giant telescope and planetarium are just yards from the golf course.
Don: “We are thinking they landed here and walked over there, do you suppose?”
And so after all the conspiracy theories, doubters and non-believers, no one is certain what happened here that night. And the people who do know, aren't talking
There is an acceptable explanation to the circle of ash. A groundskeeper's golf cart caught on fire. The whole thing went up in smoke, but the tale of the UFO lives on.
