Flood-related scams surfacing in Minot

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEN'-juhm) says flood-related scams are surfacing in Minot as the Souris River recedes.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEN'-juhm) says flood-related scams are surfacing in Minot as the Souris River recedes.

He says the most recent attempt involves text messages being sent to phones with Minot prefixes. Stenehjem says recipients should not respond, because any response could automatically register them for various offers they didn't agree to and subject them to expensive premium text messaging subscriptions.

The attorney general says the scam artists are "spoofing" legitimate telephone numbers belonging to innocent Minot residents, so it appears the text message is coming from a legitimate caller.

Stenehjem and Consumer Protection Division Director Parrell Grossman say residents should be aware of other potential scams over the next few months, including bogus home inspectors.
