By: WDAZ Staff Reports,
On Thanksgiving morning around 5 a.m. the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office received a telephone call from a Turtle Lake Township resident saying he had had his vehicle stolen and that another vehicle was on fire nearby.
Beltrami County Deputies and Bemidji Fire responded to the scene and after investigating, learned that the burned vehicle had been stolen from a nearby residence and another stolen vehicle was located, also on fire.
The Sheriff's Office says firearms were taken from a Turtle Lake township residence as well.
Deputies then located a suspect, identified as 24-year-old Fabian Wayne English, of Red Lake, MN. English was traveling northbound when deputies attempted to stop his vehicle. The Sheriff's Office says English refused to stop and deputies began pursuing.
As English crossed over the reservation line, Red Lake Police took over pursuit. English then led police on a lengthy chase through the reservation which ended west of Red Lake on Highway 1.
Red Lake Tribal Enforcement Officers say English tried to run over an officer and then suffered a single gunshot wound.
Deputies investigated English's trail and determined he had committed 10 thefts and burglaries, as well as the theft of three vehicles.
A majority of the stolen property was recovered and returned to the owners.
English was treated for injuries at North Country Regional Hospital and remains in custody pending multiple charges including assault against tribal police officers, burglary, theft and fleeing.
The case remains under investigation by the FBI, Red Lake Dept. of Public Safety, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, and the Bemidji police department.
The Minnesota State Patrol and the United States Border Patrol assisted in this pursuit and follow-up investigation.
