Authorities are reminding people how to stay safe while boating this holiday weekend. Representatives from the Minnesota DNR say life-jackets are key before getting in the water. Rules of the road apply to boats on a lake, things like lowing down and staying away from other water-crafts. Boaters should never drink and drive, and passengers should limit their alcohol consumption.

Lt. Brian Kuphal – Minnesota DNR: "This evening if people are out on the lakes for fireworks and stuff. Keep your lights on, let people know, and slow down out there.”

Another reminder, children under 10 are required to wear their life jackets at all times while boating unless attached to a dock or anchored for swimming.
