ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — A car with five occupants went off a Stearns County road and landed upside-down in the Sauk River, killing a man and two children and injuring two other men, police said Monday.

The crash was discovered Monday about 2:15 a.m. when a Stearns County deputy noticed a road sign down near the bridge. The deputy pulled over, noticed the car's tracks and called for backup.

Responding officers found the four-door sedan on its roof, partially submerged in the river, St. Cloud police Sgt. Lori Ellering said.

A 20-year-old St. Cloud man who may have been the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A 13-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother were rushed to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Ellering said.

Two other adults in the car survived the crash. A 20-year-old Moorhead man and a 33-year-old St. Cloud man were both treated at a hospital and released.

Authorities haven't released any names pending notification of relatives.

Stearns County deputies and St. Cloud police are investigating the cause of the crash. It wasn't immediately known whether alcohol played a role.
