A disappointed family in Alvarado is having to find a new way to come together this holiday weekend. The Minnesota government shutdown forced them to suddenly change their camping plans.

The Sombke family camps out nearly every weekend in the summer. This year is no exception.

Bob Sombke - Camper: “We like to camp for a couple nights and then we see the fireworks and then everyone goes home the next day.”

Campfires, games and great conversations take place every fourth of July weekend, as the three kids come home from as far away as Chicago.

Sable Omes-Sombke - Visitor: “You know kind of a long drive given the situation; you know it's really unfortunate that politics had to get in the way of the 4th of July weekend.”

For years the Sombke's spent the 4th of July in East Grand Forks, but this year they brought the campground to their own campground.

The family makes reservations at Red River Recreation Area a year ahead of time, but the government shutdown is forcing the family to move their holiday tradition.

Deb Sombke - Homeowner: “We enjoy camping and there was no other place to go camping and we could still get everybody together and have fun.”

Although the family is making the best of the situation, they are hoping the shutdown doesn't last long so they can get back to enjoying the great outdoors.

Bob Sombke - Camper: “We love State Parks! We can camp other places but we do have reservations at State Parks all summer long right now and we don't know where that's going to go at this point.”

The Sombke's are having such a good time; they may camp out in their own backyard more often.
