Kish tabbed as new Bison wrestling coach

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Following up a coach who built a program from the ground up is no easy task, especially when that person is Bucky Maughan.

But that's the challenge in front of Roger Kish, the new head man of the Bison wrestling team. I asked Kish if his age, he's 27, can help relate to his team.

Roger Kish – New NDSU Wrestling Coach: “I would say so, I came from a top tier program at Minnesota, can relate to what they're doing what they're going thru, I think I can relate to them that excitement, really get into it with our guys and then be hands on.

What's it going to take to find the guy? And get an all american...

Kish: “We had a guy, Trent Sprenkle at 125 pounds that made it to the round of 12, came close, got plenty of those guys, carry same work ethic as he does, see more guys reach that level of success see All-Americans and guys wrestling for a national championship...

How high a priority is heavyweight for you?

Kish: It's something we talked about all of last year when we struggled with it, great support for it..We did discuss it, we did address it, we have 2 guys coming in next year as freshmen, next year we'll have 3 big guys in our room.”

How close are you to Northern Iowa to being in the mix....

Kish: “I think we're there, be in the mix, not be a underdog, i think we'll be competitive with UNI and Wyoming, taking the next step and beating teams like that...”

Assistant Bret Maughan will continue in that role, it's a big wrestling recruiting weekend coming...
