HASTINGS, Minn. (AP) — A Mendota Heights woman has pleaded guilty to stealing about $8,200 from her daughters' Girl Scout troop and its chapter while she was a Scout leader.

Fifty-five-year-old Joleen Hopkins pleaded guilty Tuesday to two felony counts of theft by swindle.

The complaint says Hopkins wrote checks on Girl Scout bank accounts in 2008 and 2009 and spent some of the money at casinos, restaurants and grocery stores

The Star Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/jPHqp4 ) nearly $4,000 of the thefts were from the Mendota Heights troop's cookie sales. Once the chapter suspected Hopkins was stealing from the Scouts, the troop was disbanded in April 2009 and police were notified.

Sentencing is set for Sept. 13. Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom says full restitution for the financial losses that Hopkins caused will be sought.
