Barnesville teacher baffled by contract termination

Barnesville, MN (WDAY TV) - A Barnesville Teacher is out of a job tonight after the school board voted to not renew her contract. And she has no idea why.

It's the second time the school board has discussed not renewing the contract of Staci Marich in the last month. This time the vote was unanimous. We spoke with Marich who told us, she was completely blindsided by the decision.

Marich: “I was just doing what I love to do: Teach.”

1st Grade Teacher Staci Marich fought until the end to save her job tonight. It didn't work.

Staci Marich – Contract Terminated: “I just can't wrap my arms around it, all I am trying to do is get an answer.”

Many parents and family members who stood in defense of Marich were equally outraged.

Hanneman: "Staci did a great job with the kids, she made them learn what they needed to learn at the time but made it fun for them."

The single mother of three was a probationary teacher in her first year at Barnesville. In all of her reviews this year she either met or exceeded expectations as signed off by her principal.

21 of her 22 students tested at a level higher than the national average.

Marich: “My main thing as a teacher is to make sure my kids are successful, they're safe and they're confident, and all of those results were being shown.”

Principal Todd Henrickson declined our request for an interview, citing data privacy issues.

Marich: “The last thing I was told, well you're just not right for the future of Barnesville. When asking what does that mean, nothing.”

All school board members also declined our request for an interview. Marich said she doesn't know what she's going to do now, but is thinking about going back to school.
