The American Cancer Society is proposing a tax of on dollar and fifty cents on cigarettes. The society says revenue from the tax can go toward the state's 5 billion dollar budget deficit. If the proposal was passed while balancing the budget, the state could make up to 140 million dollars by the end of this year. A representative at Clay County Public Health tells us the price increase may help some smokers stop.
Gina Nolte – Clay County Public Health: "It does give an impetus, another motivation to stop. And some people are in a stage where yeah, they are ready to stop. And this will just put them into that next step of 'okay its time.'”
Effects from smoking kill almost 5 thousand Minnesotans a year.
